This gluttonous predatory mite plays an important role in biological crop protection. It feeds on a wide range of prey as well as pollen and is adaptable to high temperatures.
Amblyseius (Typhlodromips) swirskii needs a satisfactory food source for a fast growth of its population and prefers mainly young stages of whitefly and thrips. It consumes around 5-10 prey a day. A. swirskii also feeds on pollen and to a certain degree on spider mites and tarsonemid mites. It is suitable for cucumbers, aubergines, peppers and strawberries but not tomatoes.
The optimal development temperature is between 25 and 28°C and the predatory mite stays active even up to temperatures of 40°C; it needs a minimum temperature of 15°C.
